Samples of the Rainbow Vanamo

The first meters of Rainbow Vanamo have been weaved! We used the same two weave types as with the black test loom but because the settings of the weaving machine are a bit different, the weaves look also different. We will call the weave types "Karpalo" and "Ruutu". The yarn density of the Rainbow loom is also a little bigger and the Rainbow fabrics will be thicker than the black loom fabric. I have been able to try a thick cotton Rainbow Karpalo wrap already and it felt great with our four year old daughter :)

Ensimmäiset metrit sateenkaari Vanamoa ovat valmiina! Käytimme samoja sidoksia kuin mustan koeloimen kohdalla, mutta koska kutomakoneen asetukset ovat nyt hieman erilaiset, näyttää kangaskin vähän erilaiselta. Nimesimme sidokset uudelleen sekaannusten välttämiseksi: Karpalo ja Ruutu. Sateenkaariloimen langan tiheys on hieman suurempi kuin mustalla koeloimella, joten liinakankaasta tulee jonkin verran paksumpaa. Kokeilin paksua puuvillaista Karpaloa 4-vuotiaamme kanssa ja se tuntui oikein mukavalta ja tukevalta :)

Karpalo: Yellow cotton, turquoise cotton, purple cotton

Ruutu: Purple wool, white linen, navy cotton, red cotton

Some test results

The test results were somewhat variable depending on the test person. As always with baby wraps - someone likes one wrap and the other one likes some other wrap better :) But there were also some similarity between the experiences.

The two weaves "Puolukka" and "Solki" are different as baby wrap. Both weaves were described as fluffy and people say they look like hand woven wraps although they are actually not hand woven. Puolukka is dense and tough. The fabric has three-dimensional structure and the wrap is not slippery and it will stay well in place while carrying. Solki has more diagonal stretch, it's adaptive and very comfortable. Solki is thicker and has higher weight per square meter. On both weaves the two sides of the fabric look different. With Solki the sides are clearly different looking. With Puolukka they are closer to each other but still different.

The thinner cotton wraps are suitable for small babies and during the first year. They are as good as many other baby wraps on the market that are on the thinner scale. Since there are already a lot of brands available in this category, we decided to leave the thinner cottons for now and focus on the medium and thick quality.

Here are the weight per square meter for each wrap type on the black cotton loom. The measurements were taken after the first wash. The wovenwrapsdatabase.com contains some classification for the thickness of woven wraps.

Vanamo-liinat saivat hieman erilaisia arvioita testaajasta riippuen. Tämä on toki ymmärrettävää, sillä ihmisillä on erilaiset mieltymykset kantoliinojenkin suhteen. Joitain yhtäläisyyksiä toki myös löytyi ja saimme hyvän yleiskuvan, joka auttaa oikeiden valintojen tekemisessä jatkossa. Yllä on taulukoitu kunkin testattavan kangastyypin neliöpainot. Puolukka ja Solki ovat ominaisuuksiltaan erilaisia kantoliinoja. Kumpaakin sidostyyppiä kuvailtiin kuohkeaksi. Kuvioaiheet tuovat mieleen käsinkudotut kantoliinat, vaikka Vanamo kudotaankin koneellisesti. Puolukka on tiivis ja jämäkkä. Kankaan pinnassa on kolmiulotteisuutta ja rouheutta, minkä ansiosta liina pysyy sidonnassa hyvin paikoillaan. Solki on vinojoustavampi, hyvin mukautuva ja miellyttävä. Solki on jonkin verran paksumpi ja sillä on korkeampi neliöpaino kuin Puolukalla. Molemmilla liinoilla ovat kankaan puolet eri näköiset. Soljella liinan puolet ovat selvästi eriväriset.

Ohuemmat puuvillaiset Vanamot ovat sopivia vauvan ensimmäisen vuoden liinaksi. Koska markkinoilta löytyy paljon tämäntyyppisiä kantoliinoja, jätämme ohuet puuvillat toistaiseksi pois ja keskitymme tukevampiin vaihtoehtoihin.

Vanamo wraps for testing

We made some meters of wrap fabric in order to test different weaving parameters and to see how the fabrics actually work as a baby wrap. The loom was black cotton and we used 4 colours of cotton, white linen and purple wool for the weft. Two weaves were made in all weft materials: Puolukka and Solki. We tested two densities of cotton, too.

The wraps turn out really promising and we are very happy with them :) The back loom gives great background for the brighter weft yarn. Both weaves seem to work very well as a baby wrap. 8 wraps were sent to experienced wrappers for evaluation.

I must admit that I was quite nervous before the first trial wraps were finished. Until now I had been only examining the different fabrics from small swatches. And now we finally have actual long baby wraps to try on.

Puolukka ja Solki -sidoksia päätettiin testata kunnolla, ja kudotutimme muutaman kymmenen metrin erän kumpaakin liinakangasta. Testiliinat kudottiin mustaan puuvillaloimeen ja kuteina käytettiin 4 erisävyistä puuvillaa, valkoista pellavaa ja violettia villaa. Puuvillaa kokeilimme kahdella eri tiheydellä.

Valmiit kankaat vaikuttavat erittäin lupaavilta ja kumpikin sidos tuntuu toimivan oikein hyvin kantoliinassa. Musta loimi antaa upean pohjan kirkkaammille kudeväreille. 8 pitkää kantoliinaa lähetettiin testikierrokselle muutamalle kokeneelle liinailijalle.

Täytyy myöntää, että jännitin testierää jonkin verran - tähän asti olin päässyt hypistelemään vain pieniä kangastilkkuja. Ilmeisesti olen pystynyt vuosien varrella kuitenkin kehittämään jonkinlaista näppituntumaa kantoliinoihin :) Noh, olihan minulla myös kankaankudonnan ammattilaisia apuna, ja iso kiitos kuuluu myös heille
